CVE-2025-40304 is an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the Linux kernel fbdev subsystem's bit_putcs text-rendering path. When text is rendered near framebuffer boundaries, image width can be clipped and the backing buffer sized for that clipped width while the character count retains its larger, original value. The resulting mismatch passed to the aligned or unaligned rendering helpers can cause writes beyond the vmalloc-backed framebuffer allocation. The upstream fix adds screen-boundary checks, rejects off-screen Y positions, clips image dimensions, terminates rendering for off-screen X positions, and synchronizes the character count with clipped width.
