CVE-2025-40320 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel SMB client implementation, specifically in smb2_query_info_compound() in the cifs subsystem. During a retry or replay path, a previously allocated cfid object may be freed during the first attempt, but the cfid pointer is not reset before the operation is replayed. Subsequent cleanup can then operate on the stale pointer, creating a potential use-after-free condition. The issue manifests as refcount underflow and kernel warnings and can be reached through SMB query information and filesystem query operations. The upstream fix reinitializes cfid to NULL under the replay label so later cleanup does not dereference or release a freed object.
