CVE-2025-49677 is a local elevation-of-privilege vulnerability in the Microsoft Brokering File System caused by a use-after-free condition. The flaw stems from improper memory management during object lifecycle handling, where file-handle closure can leave stale references to freed memory. Under exploitable conditions, a local authorized attacker can trigger the vulnerable state through crafted file closure activity and attempt to reclaim or manipulate the freed kernel memory before it is safely invalidated. Available technical reporting indicates exploitation may involve corruption of kernel object state, including virtual function table pointers, to redirect execution in kernel context. Microsoft assessed exploitation as less likely because successful exploitation requires winning a race condition, reflecting high attack complexity.
