CVE-2025-5994, known as the Rebirthday Attack, is a cache poisoning vulnerability affecting caching DNS resolvers that support EDNS Client Subnet (ECS). In Unbound, the issue is present when the software is compiled with ECS support and configured to send ECS information to upstream name servers. The vulnerability arises because resolvers supporting ECS must properly segregate outgoing queries based on differing ECS information. If replies lacking corresponding ECS context are accepted into cache, an attacker can exploit a birthday-paradox-style race to match DNS transaction IDs and cause non-ECS poisonous replies to be cached. In Unbound, this affects deployments using ECS-related options that forward client subnet data upstream.
