CVE-2025-5994, named the Rebirthday Attack, is a multi-vendor DNS cache-poisoning vulnerability affecting caching resolvers that support EDNS Client Subnet (ECS). Resolvers must segregate outstanding upstream queries according to their outgoing ECS information. Failure to do so can permit a birthday-paradox attack against DNS transaction identifiers when an ECS-capable upstream server returns a non-ECS response. In Unbound, exposure requires a build with ECS support and configuration that sends client-subnet information upstream.
