CVE-2025-68431 is a heap buffer over-read in libheif, a HEIF and AVIF decoder and encoder, affecting upstream versions before 1.21.0. A crafted HEIF image exercising the overlay image item path triggers the flaw in HeifPixelImage::overlay(). The function computes a negative row length, likely due to an unclipped overlay rectangle or invalid offsets. Conversion to size_t produces an oversized length passed to memcpy, causing a read beyond the source image plane and a crash. Version 1.21.0 fixes the vulnerability.

A heap buffer over-read in libheif's HEIF overlay processing affects versions before 1.21.0. A negative row length converted to size_t causes memcpy to read beyond the source plane, potentially exposing data and crashing the application. The reference rates the vulnerability High, with a CVSS v3 base score of 7.1, and reports available exploits. Remediation is to update Echo packages to 1.19.8-1+e1 or later, or use the upstream fix in 1.21.0. Avoiding decoding images with iovl overlay boxes is a documented workaround.
A vulnerability addressed by the Fedora 44 libheif update; the provided CVSS v3 vector indicates network reachability, low attack complexity, required user interaction, low confidentiality impact, and high availability impact.
A vulnerability addressed by the Fedora 43 libheif security advisory. The supplied CVSS v3 vector indicates network attackability, no privileges required, user interaction required, low confidentiality impact, and high availability impact.
A potential heap buffer over-read vulnerability in libheif. The referenced Fedora EPEL 10.2 security update upgrades libheif from 1.17.6-2.el10_0 to 1.23.5-3.el10_2 and is classified as high severity.
