CVE-2025-71231 is a Linux kernel vulnerability in the crypto/iaa subsystem. The flaw is in find_empty_iaa_compression_mode(), where a local variable is initialized to -EINVAL but that value is immediately overwritten by the loop logic and therefore never returned. When no empty compression mode is available, the function can return IAA_COMP_MODES_MAX instead of an error. That out-of-range index is then used by add_iaa_compression_mode(), causing an invalid array access. The upstream fix changes the function so it returns either a valid compression-mode index or -EINVAL. Based on the provided content, this is an out-of-bounds index/array access bug in kernel code that can lead to memory-safety failure.
