CVE-2026-14628 is a path traversal vulnerability in NousResearch hermes-agent affecting versions up to and including 2026.5.16. The issue is in the extract_media function in gateway/platforms/base.py, within the Live Webhook Endpoint component. Improper handling of attacker-controlled path input allows a remote attacker to manipulate file path resolution and traverse outside the intended directory scope. Public reporting indicates the exploit is publicly available. Based on the available information, the flaw enables unintended filesystem access via crafted input processed by extract_media.

This repository is a small educational proof-of-concept demonstrating a path traversal/arbitrary file read pattern mapped to CVE-2026-14628, rather than a live exploit against the real NousResearch hermes-agent codebase. The structure is minimal: README.md explains the vulnerability class and relationship to the CVE; vulnerable_example.py contains the insecure implementation; secure_example.py contains the remediated version. The vulnerable script defines extract_media(filename) with MEDIA_ROOT = "media_storage" and performs os.path.join(MEDIA_ROOT, filename) followed by open() with no validation. When given the attacker-controlled payload ../secret_outside_media_root.txt, it escapes the intended directory and reads a file outside the media root. The secure script demonstrates two defenses: rejecting suspicious filenames containing separators or '..', and verifying the resolved absolute path remains under MEDIA_ROOT before opening the file. There are no network callbacks, C2 endpoints, or remote exploitation mechanics in the code itself; the attack is modeled as attacker-controlled input to a file-access routine. Overall, this is a valid PoC/reproduction of a CWE-22 path traversal issue that provides arbitrary file disclosure in the demo scenario, with a companion fixed example for comparison.
