Multiple Cisco products that embed/use the Snort 3 Detection Engine are affected by a vulnerability in DCE/RPC request processing that can be triggered by an unauthenticated remote attacker. The issue is an error in buffer-handling logic when parsing/processing DCE/RPC requests, resulting in an out-of-bounds read (notably described as occurring in Snort 3’s _bnfa_search_csparse_nfa method). An attacker can exploit the flaw by sending a large number of DCE/RPC requests over an established connection that is inspected by Snort 3, causing the engine to read past the end of an allocated buffer and potentially leak sensitive information from the Snort 3 data stream; the engine may also restart, interrupting packet inspection.
