CVE-2026-20889 is a heap-based buffer overflow in the x3f_thumb_loader functionality of LibRaw, affecting at least commit d20315b. The issue is triggered by a specially crafted Sigma X3F image file. According to the provided analysis, an attacker can mutate a legitimate X3F file by modifying thumbnail directory metadata to declare excessively large column and row values. During parsing, this leads to an integer overflow in size calculation, causing allocation of an undersized heap buffer. LibRaw subsequently decodes thumbnail image data into that undersized allocation, resulting in an out-of-bounds heap write and corruption of adjacent heap metadata.
