CVE-2026-23136 is a Linux kernel vulnerability in libceph affecting the Ceph OSD client sparse-read reply handling logic. When a fault occurs, the client abandons and reestablishes the connection and retries pending operations. Sparse-read reply progress is tracked by a state machine that is largely independent of the messenger state. In the vulnerable behavior, if the connection is lost mid-payload or the sparse-read state machine encounters an error, the sparse-read state is not reset in osd_fault() before the retry occurs. As a result, the OSD client can interpret the beginning of a new sparse-read reply as a continuation of the previous reply, causing state confusion and potentially driving the sparse-read machinery into a persistent failure condition. The upstream fix resets the sparse-read state in osd_fault() so retried operations begin from a clean state.
