CVE-2026-24049 is a path traversal flaw in the Python wheel package's unpack functionality affecting wheel versions 0.40.0 through 0.46.1. The vulnerability arises because the unpack logic applies file permission changes using the archive header filename directly during a chmod operation, while the extraction step may have already sanitized the path. This mismatch allows a crafted wheel archive to cause permission changes on attacker-selected filesystem paths outside the intended extraction directory. By making sensitive files or executable scripts writable, the flaw can enable privilege escalation or create conditions for subsequent arbitrary code execution. The issue is fixed in wheel 0.46.2.
