CVE-2026-24281 is an Apache ZooKeeper TLS identity verification flaw in ZKTrustManager. When certificate hostname verification against an IP Subject Alternative Name fails, ZKTrustManager can fall back to reverse DNS (PTR) resolution and then accept a certificate valid for the resolved hostname. This behavior allows hostname verification to be bypassed if an attacker can control or spoof the PTR record for the target IP address and present a certificate for that PTR-derived name that is trusted by ZKTrustManager. The issue affects Apache ZooKeeper 3.8.0 through 3.8.5 and 3.9.0 through 3.9.4. The flaw can enable impersonation of ZooKeeper servers or clients in client and quorum TLS communications.

A hostname-verification vulnerability in Apache ZooKeeper's ZKTrustManager allows server or client impersonation through controlled or spoofed reverse-DNS records when IP subject alternative name validation fails. Exploitation requires a certificate trusted by ZKTrustManager for the PTR hostname. The reported CVSS v3 base score is 7.4, with high confidentiality and integrity impact. Versions 3.8.6 and 3.9.5 introduce an option to disable reverse-DNS lookup in client and quorum protocols.
