CVE-2026-28672 is an improper neutralization of special elements used in an operating-system command (command injection) vulnerability in Apache Ranger. Apache Ranger versions 0.6 through 2.8 are affected. Input processed by vulnerable functionality may be incorporated into operating-system commands without sufficient neutralization, allowing attacker-controlled command content to be executed.

This repository is a small self-contained Java proof-of-concept reproducer for CVE-2026-28672, an OS command injection in Apache Ranger's unixusersync component, specifically UnixUserGroupBuilder. The repo contains 7 files: build/runtime support (pom.xml, Dockerfile, docker-compose.yml), documentation (README.md), and two Java source files. ExploitMain.java is the main entry point and orchestrates the demonstration by deleting any prior marker file, invoking the vulnerable code path with a benign username, then invoking it with a malicious username containing a shell payload, and finally invoking the fixed code path for comparison. UnixUserGroupBuilderVuln.java isolates the vulnerable and fixed execution forms: the vulnerable method uses Runtime.getRuntime().exec(new String[]{"bash","-c","id -G " + userName}), while the fixed method executes id directly as an argument vector. The exploit capability is arbitrary OS command execution when an attacker can control a username consumed by Ranger user-sync; the PoC payload uses 'touch /tmp/pwned-28672' to create a marker file as evidence. There are no remote C2 or callback endpoints in the code; the main fingerprintable artifacts are the local marker file path and the vulnerable shell command pattern. The repository's purpose is educational and defensive validation rather than stealthy exploitation: it demonstrates the vulnerable behavior and confirms that Apache Ranger 2.9.0 mitigates it.
