CVE-2026-33176 is a denial-of-service vulnerability in Active Support, the support library component used by Ruby on Rails. In affected versions prior to 8.1.2.1, 8.0.4.1, and 7.2.3.1, Active Support number helpers accept string inputs expressed in scientific notation. When such input is processed, BigDecimal can expand the notation into an extremely large decimal representation. Subsequent formatting of that expanded value by the number conversion helpers can drive excessive memory allocation and CPU consumption. The issue was addressed by rejecting scientific notation in NumberConverter.
