CVE-2026-33947 affects jq versions 1.8.1 and earlier. The functions jv_setpath(), jv_getpath(), and delpaths_sorted() recurse according to the length of a caller-supplied path array without enforcing a recursion-depth limit. An attacker-controlled flat array of approximately 65,000 integers, contained in roughly 200 KB of JSON, can exhaust the C call stack when a trusted filter uses it as a path argument, terminating the process with SIGSEGV. The MAX_PARSING_DEPTH limit of 10,000 does not prevent exploitation because it governs JSON parsing rather than runtime path operations, whose arrays can also be constructed programmatically.

A stack-exhaustion denial-of-service vulnerability in jq versions 1.8.1 and below. An attacker-controlled path array containing approximately 65,000 integers can trigger unbounded recursion in setpath, getpath, or delpaths operations, causing a segmentation fault. The JSON parser's depth limit does not protect these runtime path operations. The issue was addressed in commit fb59f1491058d58bdc3e8dd28f1773d1ac690a1f; the advisory recommends updating the Echo jq package and related packages to version 1.7.1-6+deb13u1+e2 or later. The listed CVSS v3 base score is 5.5 (Medium).
