CVE-2026-34219 is a remotely reachable denial-of-service vulnerability in the Rust libp2p Gossipsub implementation prior to version 0.49.4. The flaw is in backoff expiry handling for PRUNE control messages. A remote peer can send a crafted PRUNE message containing an attacker-controlled backoff value near the maximum representable duration. The implementation accepts this value and stores it as an Instant near the upper representable bound. During a subsequent heartbeat, the code performs unchecked time arithmetic by adding a slack Duration to the stored backoff Instant. If the stored value is sufficiently large, the addition overflows and triggers a panic. The issue is consistent with integer overflow in time calculations and results in a reachable assertion-style crash condition in normal protocol processing.
