Apache Log4j Core contains a log injection vulnerability in the Rfc5424Layout component affecting versions 2.21.0 through 2.25.3, and also reported for 3.0.0-beta1 through 3.0.0-beta3. The flaw is caused by undocumented renaming of security-relevant configuration attributes used when Rfc5424Layout is configured directly for stream-based syslog services. One affected attribute rename caused newline escaping to stop functioning for deployments using TCP framing under RFC 6587, allowing attacker-controlled CRLF sequences to be emitted into log output. A second attribute rename caused deployments intended to use TLS framing under RFC 5425 to be silently downgraded to unframed TCP under RFC 6587, also without newline escaping. The issue does not affect SyslogAppender users because its configuration attributes were not changed.
