The mktemp utility in uutils coreutils improperly handles an empty TMPDIR environment variable. When TMPDIR is set to an empty string, the uutils implementation treats that empty value as a valid directory path instead of falling back to /tmp as GNU mktemp does. As a result, temporary files are created in the current working directory rather than in the intended temporary directory. This behavior can place temporary files in a location with weaker access controls or broader visibility than /tmp, exposing temporary data to unintended parties.
