CVE-2026-35355 affects the install utility in uutils coreutils. During file installation, the implementation unlinks an existing destination file and then recreates it using a path-based operation without exclusive creation semantics such as O_EXCL/create_new. This introduces a time-of-check to time-of-use race window between the unlink and the subsequent create/open operation. A local attacker who can modify the destination path in that window can replace it with a symbolic link, causing the privileged install operation to follow the attacker-controlled link and write to an unintended target file. The issue is specifically described as a TOCTOU symlink race in uu_install's install functionality and can result in arbitrary file overwrite when exploited under elevated privileges.
