CVE-2026-35356 is a Time-of-Check to Time-of-Use (TOCTOU) vulnerability in the uutils coreutils install utility when invoked with the -D flag. In this code path, install creates parent directories for the destination and later performs a second path resolution to create the target file. These operations are not anchored to a stable directory file descriptor, so path components are re-resolved through the filesystem between steps. An attacker with concurrent write access to the destination tree can replace an intermediate path component with a symbolic link during this race window, causing the subsequent privileged file creation/write to be redirected to an attacker-chosen filesystem location. The issue is effectively a symlink race in uu_install’s handling of install -D during directory creation and destination file creation.
