CVE-2026-35358 affects the cp utility in uutils coreutils during recursive copy operations. When a source tree contains character or block device nodes, cp reads the device as a byte stream and creates a regular destination file rather than recreating the device node. This destroys the source device's semantics and can cause copying to continue indefinitely for unbounded device sources.
