CVE-2026-35366 affects the printenv utility in uutils coreutils. The utility fails to display environment variables whose names or values contain invalid UTF-8 byte sequences. Because POSIX permits arbitrary bytes in environment strings, this behavior is incorrect: instead of emitting the raw environment entry, the uutils implementation silently skips it. As a result, maliciously crafted environment variables, including security-relevant variables such as LD_PRELOAD, can be present in a process environment while remaining invisible to administrators or tooling that relies on uutils printenv for inspection or auditing.
