CVE-2026-35371 is a logic flaw in the Rust-based uutils coreutils implementation of the id utility. In src/uu/id/src/id.rs, the code that resolves the effective user name for pretty-print output calls the user lookup routine uid2usr with the effective group ID (egid) instead of the effective user ID (euid). Because uid_t and gid_t are both represented as u32 at this API boundary, the variable mix-up is not caught by the compiler. As a result, when the real UID and effective UID differ, the utility can display the wrong effective user name if the EGID numerically matches another valid UID on the system. The issue affects human-readable diagnostic output rather than the underlying kernel credential state, but it can misrepresent active process privileges to operators and tooling that consume id output.
