CVE-2026-35375 is a logic error in the uutils coreutils implementation of split. When constructing output chunk pathnames from prefix or suffix inputs containing invalid UTF-8 byte sequences, the utility uses lossy UTF-8 conversion. Invalid bytes are rewritten as the Unicode replacement character rather than preserved as raw pathname bytes, unlike GNU split behavior. This produces output pathnames that differ from those requested by the caller.
