CVE-2026-40072 is a server-side request forgery vulnerability in web3.py's implementation of CCIP Read / OffchainLookup (EIP-3668). In affected versions from 6.0.0b3 before 7.15.0, and from 8.0.0b1 before 8.0.0b2, web3.py processes OffchainLookup responses by issuing HTTP requests to URLs provided in offchain_lookup_payload["urls"]. After substituting template variables such as {sender} and {data}, the library uses those contract-supplied URLs directly without validating the destination. Because CCIP Read is enabled by default via global_ccip_read_enabled=True on providers, applications using .call() / eth_call against untrusted or user-supplied contract addresses can be induced to make arbitrary outbound HTTP requests. This exposes backend services, indexers, APIs, and similar environments to SSRF via malicious smart contracts.
