CVE-2026-41873 is a critical HTTP Request/Response Smuggling vulnerability in the retired Lua implementation of Apache Pony Mail. The flaw stems from a CRLF injection condition in the Lua email handling logic, described as occurring in email.lua, where attacker-controlled input is incorporated into internally generated HTTP requests to the backend Elasticsearch service with insufficient sanitization. By injecting crafted line breaks into a request parameter, an unauthenticated attacker can cause inconsistent interpretation of the HTTP stream and smuggle arbitrary HTTP requests to Elasticsearch. This bypasses Pony Mail’s normal application-layer access controls and can be used to directly manipulate backend data, including creating or modifying account and session records, resulting in administrator account takeover. All versions of the Lua implementation are affected.
