CVE-2026-41991 is an insecure temporary-file handling vulnerability in GNU gzip's gzexe utility. If mktemp is unavailable in the executing user's PATH, gzexe falls back to a temporary filename derived solely from its process ID and creates it without exclusive creation or an existence check. A local attacker can predict that name and pre-create it as a symbolic link to a file writable by the user running gzexe. gzexe follows the link when writing its temporary output, creating a TOCTOU condition that permits an arbitrary file overwrite in the victim's write context.
