CVE-2026-42486 is an authorization flaw in XAPI role-based access control affecting the VM.platform:hvm_serial parameter. A user with the lower-privileged vm-admin role can set VM.platform:hvm_serial even though that operation should be restricted to the fully privileged pool-admin role. The issue stems from inadequate per-key RBAC enforcement on VM.platform setters, allowing modification of a sensitive platform key through an API path that did not correctly apply the intended privilege boundary. Because the hvm_serial setting can be used to direct writes into the control domain, successful exploitation can result in arbitrary file write in dom0.
