CVE-2026-42497 is an improper link-resolution vulnerability in Perl Archive::Tar before version 3.08. During extraction, the module's special-file handling passes an archive-supplied hardlink target directly to the operating system link operation without rejecting absolute paths or parent-directory traversal segments. A crafted archive can therefore create a hardlink in the extraction tree to an existing file outside that tree. Because the post-extraction metadata handling excludes symlinks but not hardlinks, Archive::Tar can also apply archive-controlled mode, ownership, and timestamp metadata to the shared inode.
