A cryptographic validation flaw in OpenSSL affects DHX (X9.42) finite-field Diffie-Hellman peer key handling in EVP_PKEY_derive_set_peer(). When validating a DHX peer key, OpenSSL performs the subgroup membership check Y^q mod p using the peer-supplied q parameter instead of the local key's q, and later matches domain parameters without comparing q. An attacker can therefore present a malicious X9.42 peer key that reuses the victim's p and g parameters, substitutes a forged small-prime q value, and supplies a public value Y of corresponding small order. This causes the derived shared secret to be confined to a small subgroup, leaking the victim private key modulo that small factor. By repeating the exchange across small-prime factors of the cofactor and combining the results with the Chinese Remainder Theorem, an attacker can recover the full private key. This is a Lim-Lee style small-subgroup-confinement attack. The issue has a narrow practical exposure and primarily affects deployments using static DHX keys, especially CMP environments with long-lived RA or CA keys and bespoke interactive applications using X9.42 DHX.
