CVE-2026-42786 is an unauthenticated remote denial-of-service vulnerability in mtrudel Bandit affecting versions 0.5.0 through before 1.11.0. The flaw is in the WebSocket fragment reassembly path in Elixir.Bandit.WebSocket.Connection.handle_frame/3 in lib/bandit/websocket/connection.ex. When Bandit receives Continuation frames with fin: false, it appends each fragment payload to a per-connection iolist without enforcing any cumulative size limit for the in-progress message. Although the max_frame_size option restricts the size of individual frames, it does not bound the total size of a fragmented message. An attacker can therefore keep sending an unbounded sequence of continuation frames without ever terminating the message with fin=1, causing linear growth of BEAM memory usage. Because this accumulation occurs before WebSock.handle_in/2 is invoked, the application layer cannot interpose its own size checks at that stage. Deployments using Phoenix Channels or LiveView over Bandit inherit this exposure when they accept WebSocket connections.
