CVE-2026-42812 is an improper storage-location validation flaw in Apache Polaris versions before 1.4.1. An ALTER TABLE-style update that changes only the Iceberg write.metadata.path property bypasses the commit-time location-change branch intended to enforce storage allowlist, overlap, and metadata-location validation before Polaris writes metadata. Polaris can therefore perform a security-sensitive metadata write to an attacker-chosen reachable location. In configurations permitting unstructured table locations, an accepted attacker-controlled metadata location can be persisted in table state and subsequently used by table-load and credential-vending operations without revalidation.

A related critical Apache Polaris vulnerability that allows attacker-controlled metadata path changes to result in credential issuance to arbitrary paths through insufficient revalidation and authorization checks.
An improper input-validation vulnerability in Apache Polaris that permits a user able to modify table settings to bypass intended pre-write storage-location validation by changing write.metadata.path. Under permissive unstructured table-location settings, it can persist attacker-chosen metadata paths and subsequently cause temporary cloud-storage credentials to be issued for the selected location, risking disclosure, modification, corruption, or deletion of reachable data and metadata.
A related Apache Polaris vulnerability involving missing protection on the write metadata path.
A critical Apache Polaris vulnerability in storage location validation that allows changes to write.metadata.path to bypass validation, enabling arbitrary metadata writes and temporary cloud credential vending for attacker-chosen storage locations.
