CVE-2026-42955 is a low-severity variant of the ghost domain names attack family affecting NLnet Labs Unbound from 1.16.2 through 1.25.1 inclusive. The flaw is related to the earlier CVE-2026-40622 fix and arises because cached parent-side A and AAAA glue rrsets can have their effective ghost-domain lifetime renewed once when processed by a vulnerable resolver. A single client query for A or AAAA data can cause Unbound to overwrite an expired cached parent-side glue rrset and thereby extend the ghost domain window by as much as the configured maximum cache TTL value. In deployments using the non-default setting harden-referral-path: yes, Unbound can perform the necessary query implicitly, removing the need for a separate client-triggered query. The issue was fixed by additionally clamping the TTL of A and AAAA glue records so they cannot be used for a one-time delegation renewal.
