CVE-2026-44028 is a local privilege escalation vulnerability in Nix and Lix caused by unbounded recursion in the Nix Archive (NAR) parser. When parsing a maliciously crafted NAR containing deeply nested directory structures, the parser performs recursive calls on a coroutine stack allocated without a guard page. This allows stack exhaustion to overflow into adjacent heap memory, producing a stack-to-heap overflow and heap corruption. In multi-user deployments, the Nix/Lix daemon typically runs as root, so successful exploitation can result in arbitrary code execution in the daemon context. The issue was introduced in Nix 2.24.4 and Lix 2.93.0. Fixed versions are Nix 2.34.7, 2.33.6, 2.32.8, 2.31.5, 2.30.5, 2.29.4, and 2.28.7; and Lix 2.95.2, 2.94.2, and 2.93.4.
