CVE-2026-4438 is an input-validation vulnerability in GNU C Library (glibc) versions 2.34 through 2.43. When name-service switching is configured to use glibc's DNS backend, gethostbyaddr and gethostbyaddr_r can return invalid DNS hostnames because of a defect in getanswer_ptr. Accepted hostnames can contain shell metacharacters. Applications that pass these hostnames to a shell without guarding against shell expansion may consequently be vulnerable to shell injection.

A vulnerability in GNU C Library (glibc) versions 2.34 through 2.43 can cause gethostbyaddr or gethostbyaddr_r to return an invalid DNS hostname when nsswitch.conf specifies the library's DNS backend. The advisory assigns a medium-severity CVSS v3 score of 5.4, with potential confidentiality and integrity impacts. Exploits are available. The recommended fix is to update glibc and related packages to Echo package version 2.41-12+deb13u2+e2 or later.
A vulnerability covered by an Alma Linux 9.6 security advisory, rated Moderate by the vendor. The supplied CVSS v3 vector indicates adjacent-network attackability with low complexity, no privileges or user interaction required, and low confidentiality and integrity impact.
A vulnerability covered by a TuxCare/Rocky Linux 9.6 local security-check plugin. The supplied CVSS v3 vector indicates adjacent-network attack exposure, low attack complexity, no privileges or user interaction required, and low confidentiality and integrity impact. The metadata indicates available exploits and a patch.
A GNU C Library flaw where gethostbyaddr and gethostbyaddr_r can return invalid DNS hostnames; fixed in glibc 2.44.
