CVE-2026-44477 is a critical vulnerability in CloudNativePG affecting versions prior to 1.29.1 and 1.28.3. The flaw is in the metrics exporter’s PostgreSQL authentication and privilege model. The exporter connects over the pod-local Unix socket as the PostgreSQL superuser and then attempts to reduce privileges by issuing SET ROLE to pg_monitor. Because SET ROLE changes current_user but does not change session_user, the underlying session retains superuser identity. Any SQL expression evaluated during a metrics scrape can invoke RESET ROLE to restore effective superuser privileges within that session. Once superuser privileges are regained, an attacker can abuse PostgreSQL functionality such as COPY ... TO PROGRAM to spawn operating-system subprocesses as the postgres user inside the primary pod. The issue is not prevented by the exporter’s READ ONLY transaction mode because that restriction applies to database state changes rather than external process execution.
