CVE-2026-44687 is a low-severity logic flaw in NLnet Labs Unbound affecting versions 1.13.2 through 1.25.1. The vulnerability is caused by an off-by-one error in the harden-below-nxdomain processing, which is enabled by default. During the upward DNS cache walk used to synthesize NXDOMAIN responses beneath DNSSEC-signed zones, the delegation-point guard checks the domain name before stripping a label. This allows one extra iteration when the current name equals the configured stub or forward zone apex. As a result, Unbound strips one additional label and probes the cache at the immediate public parent of the configured stub or forward zone. If that parent has a cached DNSSEC-secure NXDOMAIN for the intermediate label, Unbound incorrectly treats that result as authoritative for names that should instead be resolved through the configured stub or forward zone. The configured upstream is therefore never contacted, effectively shadowing the intended private namespace.
