CVE-2026-46483 is a command injection vulnerability in Vim prior to version 9.2.0479 affecting the tar plugin on Unix-like systems. The flaw is located in tar#Vimuntar() in runtime/autoload/tar.vim when handling decompression of .tgz archives. The vulnerable code constructs :!gunzip and :!gzip -d commands using shellescape(tartail) without enabling the special-handling flag required for strings embedded in Vim :! commands. As a result, crafted archive filenames containing a single quote together with Vim cmdline-special characters can trigger Vim command-line special expansion before the command is passed to the shell, leading to unintended shell command execution in the security context of the user running Vim.
