CVE-2026-46703 is a critical path traversal/symlink handling flaw in Boxlite's OCI image layer extraction logic affecting versions prior to 0.9.0. Boxlite allows users to specify OCI images for containers launched inside its sandbox service. When extracting OCI image layer tarballs, Boxlite did not fully constrain path resolution to the intended extraction root. A crafted layer could contain a symlink entry pointing to an absolute host path, such as /tmp, followed by a file entry whose path resolves through that symlink. As a result, Boxlite could write attacker-controlled content outside the intended rootfs directory onto the host filesystem. The issue is effectively a container escape during image extraction and may further lead to remote code execution on the host. The vendor states the flaw was fixed in 0.9.0 by routing destructive filesystem operations through a SafeRoot handle; on Linux this uses openat2 with RESOLVE_IN_ROOT, preventing tar entries from resolving outside the extraction root even when earlier entries in the same layer create adversarial symlinks.
