CVE-2026-49136 is a path traversal vulnerability affecting Banana Slides through version 0.4.0. The flaw is in the AI service backend's generate_image() function, which attempts to confine file access to the uploads directory using an incomplete prefix check based on os.path.startswith() without a trailing path separator. Because this validation is insufficient, an attacker can supply crafted markdown image references in user-controlled page descriptions that resolve to sibling directories whose names share the uploads directory prefix. This bypasses the intended directory restriction and causes the application to open files from unintended filesystem locations via PIL Image.open(). The issue allows unauthenticated access to arbitrary image-format files outside the intended uploads directory. The vulnerability was patched in commit e8bc490.
