CVE-2026-50540 is a host code execution vulnerability in Kata Containers affecting both the Go and Rust runtimes prior to version 4.0.0. The flaw is caused by insufficient validation of the pod annotation used to specify a sandbox configuration path. The runtime accepts an arbitrary configuration path through the io.katacontainers.config_path annotation and passes the referenced host-accessible TOML file to the configuration loader without adequate restriction. Because the Kata runtime configuration can define privileged execution parameters, including the hypervisor binary and virtio-fs daemon binary, an attacker can provide a malicious configuration file that causes attacker-controlled binaries to be launched when the sandbox starts. This results in execution of attacker-controlled code as root on the host.
