CVE-2026-52761 is a rule-bypass vulnerability in OWASP ModSecurity affecting versions 3.0.0 through 3.0.15 on i386 (32-bit) architectures. The flaw is in the t:utf8toUnicode transformation implemented in src/actions/transformations/utf8_to_unicode.cc. Due to incorrect use of sizeof() on a char pointer rather than the actual Unicode output buffer length, the transformation can produce truncated or otherwise incorrect output on i386 systems. As a result, ModSecurity may normalize attacker-controlled input incorrectly before applying detection logic. Rules that depend on the utf8toUnicode transformation can therefore inspect data that differs from the intended transformed representation, enabling crafted payloads to evade detection. The issue was corrected in ModSecurity 3.0.16.
