CVE-2026-53196 is a heap-based buffer overflow in the Linux kernel USB serial io_ti driver’s get_manuf_info() function. The function allocates a buffer sized for an edge_ti_manuf_descriptor, which is 10 bytes, then reads a device-controlled manufacturer-descriptor Size value from the device I2C EEPROM into that buffer. Validation only ensured that the descriptor remained within the maximum I2C image size of 16,384 bytes, rather than requiring it to match the destination allocation. A malicious device can specify a Size value of up to 16,377 bytes, causing an overflow of up to 16,367 bytes. Subsequent checksum validation also traverses the buffer according to the attacker-controlled size, resulting in additional out-of-bounds memory access. The fix rejects manufacturer descriptors whose lengths are shorter or longer than the expected size before reading them.
