CVE-2026-53910 affects the diff3 tool in GNU diffutils versions through 3.12. Multiple signed integer overflows in line-mapping calculations can corrupt memory allocation sizes and loop bounds. Processing crafted output from a diff backend can consequently cause insufficient heap allocation followed by out-of-bounds writes. An attacker must control the diff output consumed by diff3, for example by supplying a malicious backend through the --diff-program option. A crash has been demonstrated; potential remote code execution is claimed but disputed by the maintainers, who consider the issue a bug rather than a security vulnerability.

A locally exploitable vulnerability with low attack complexity that can affect availability; the CVSS v3 vector requires low privileges and indicates high availability impact.
An integer overflow vulnerability affecting GNU diffutils software.
A heap-based buffer overflow in the diff3 tool from GNU diffutils caused by multiple signed integer overflows in line-mapping calculations, which can lead to insufficient memory allocation, out-of-bounds writes, crashes, and potentially remote code execution.
