CVE-2026-54179 is an improper file upload validation vulnerability in Laravel Backpack CRUD affecting the SingleBase64Image upload handling. The vulnerable logic insufficiently validates base64-encoded image uploads, allowing arbitrary file content to be accepted and written to the configured storage disk under an extensionless filename when an image field is configured with file storage support. The issue stems from trusting the supplied base64 image structure without adequately enforcing an allowed MIME subtype, without reliably validating the decoded bytes as a legitimate image, and without rejecting uploads that resolve to an empty extension. As a result, an authenticated administrative user can store non-image content through a feature intended only for image uploads.

Successful exploitation allows an authenticated administrator to upload arbitrary file content to application-controlled storage. Depending on how the application or web server exposes uploaded content, this can lead to stored cross-site scripting when the content is later rendered or accessed by a browser, and may also enable other unintended behaviors related to unsafe content hosting or content sniffing. The primary security consequence is unauthorized storage of attacker-controlled content in a trusted application context.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Until patched versions can be deployed, restrict access to administrative upload functionality to the smallest possible set of trusted users, and avoid serving uploaded content in a way that permits browser interpretation of attacker-controlled data. Configure responses that may expose uploaded content with X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff to reduce the risk of browser content sniffing. Additional hardening should include segregating uploaded files from executable or sensitive application paths and ensuring uploaded content is served with safe, explicit content types.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade backpack/crud to version 6.8.14, 7.0.38, or a later fixed release. The corrected implementation enforces MIME subtype allowlisting, validates the decoded file bytes using file type inspection, and rejects uploads that would otherwise produce empty extensions. After upgrading, review existing uploaded content for suspicious non-image files that may have been stored through the vulnerable workflow.
