CVE-2026-55973 is a stack-based buffer overflow in NLnet Labs Unbound versions 1.23.0 through 1.25.1 when DNS Error Reporting is enabled. Unbound improperly uses the EDNS Report-Channel option length from an upstream response as the agent-domain length. If the encoded domain is followed by attacker-controlled trailing bytes, processing of the synthetic DNS Error Report query name subsequently walks beyond an embedded root label in find_closest_of_type(). The first trailing byte is then interpreted as a label length by dname_query_hash(), overwriting the stack variable labuf.
