CVE-2026-55990 is a denial-of-service vulnerability in NLnet Labs Unbound affecting versions 1.7.0 through 1.25.1. The flaw occurs in DNSCrypt configuration handling when the 'dnscrypt:' clause specifies more provider certificate entries than matching secret-key entries. In that state, Unbound initializes only the matched prefix of internal DNSCrypt slot structures and leaves trailing slots containing allocator fill data. The server later iterates based on the number of configured certificate files rather than the number of valid initialized slots, causing it to access an uninitialized garbage entry. A remote unauthenticated client can trigger this path by sending a crafted UDP datagram of sufficient length to the configured DNSCrypt listener, leading to a garbage dereference and process termination. The issue is only present when Unbound is built with DNSCrypt support enabled and deployed with the faulty DNSCrypt configuration.
