CVE-2026-56416 is a heap-based buffer overflow in NLnet Labs Unbound through version 1.25.1. During DNSSEC validation, canonicalization of RDATA for RRSIG-covered PX, RP, MINFO, or SOA RRsets calculates the location of a second embedded domain name after the first name without verifying that the second name is present. Malformed RDATA terminating after the first domain name can cause the canonicalization routine to traverse stale scratch-buffer data and potentially continue beyond the heap allocation, particularly where msg-buffer-size is reduced from its default value.
