CVE-2026-64704 is a type confusion vulnerability in Apple SMBClient’s handling of SMB2 CREATE response contexts. The flaw arises because the SMB create-context parser reportedly trusts the context type identifier returned by the server and does not adequately verify that the reply context matches the type originally requested by the client. In the described vulnerable path, a client request containing a Resolve ID create context can receive a malicious server reply that labels the context as a lease context instead. The parser then enters the lease-handling path and reinterprets a Resolve ID structure as a different internal structure used for durable handle and lease processing. This incorrect type reinterpretation can cause attacker-controlled data to be treated as a kernel pointer, resulting in arbitrary kernel pointer read or dereference behavior. Apple states the issue was addressed through improved memory handling. The vulnerability affects macOS prior to the fixes released in macOS Sequoia 15.7.8, macOS Sonoma 14.8.8, and macOS Tahoe 26.6.
