CVE-2026-72693 is a local privilege escalation vulnerability in openvt from the kbd package. The flaw affects the -u code path, which is intended to identify the owner of the current virtual terminal and then execute login as that user from a privileged context. In the documented kbrequest/init deployment, authenticate_user() determines ownership using stat() on /proc/<pid>/fd/0. Because stat() follows the /proc/<pid>/fd/0 symlink to the underlying TTY device node, the returned st_uid reflects the owner of the terminal device rather than the owner of the process holding the file descriptor. This can cause openvt to incorrectly conclude that an unprivileged process attached to the terminal belongs to the privileged console owner after logout or ownership reversion of the TTY. If that check succeeds, openvt -u proceeds to invoke a passwordless login as the selected user. In the documented openvt -us kbrequest/init usage, this can lead to passwordless login as root on the spawned virtual terminal.
